Property developers and investors, Calthorpe Estates, scooped the ’Green Design’ Award for their £2.2 million office scheme, 19 George Road, at the recent Business Design Innovation (BDI) Industry and Genius Awards.

The 12,545 sq ft development, located in Edgbaston and designed by 3DReid, won the category for its exceptional environmental design credentials. The scheme, which is let to chartered tax advisors Shaws, includes unique energy conservation measures like flow regulators to strictly monitor water consumption and high efficiency lamps used throughout the building to keep it as sustainable as possible.

19 George Road was also awarded Birmingham’s first BREEAM* rating of ‘excellent’ for an office building earlier this year as well as being named as the Sustainable Development of the Year at the West Midlands Insider Property Awards and receiving the Small Projects Award for the West Midlands and East Anglia at the recent BCO Awards.
The BDI Awards aim to recognise the most inspirational building, environmental and product designs of Birmingham and the West Midlands.
The judging panel was chaired by Professor Michael Parkinson, the author of this year's masterplanning study into the design and layout of central Birmingham and included sculptor Tim Tolkien, the great-nephew of the legendary Lord of the Rings author, who designed the winners’ trophies.
The judges said: “19 George Road is a truly delightful building that responds to the constraints of its site. The building delivers real efficiency with its low running costs, state of the art heating and cooling system all in an elegant, attractive working environment.”

David Povall, Commercial Director at Calthorpe Estates commented: “We are exceptionally proud that 19 George Road has again been acknowledged by the industry for its exceptional sustainable credentials. The BDI Awards are renowned for recognising the most inspirational examples of environmental, building and product design in the West Midlands and we’re delighted our scheme has been acknowledged.

“19 George Road is a great example of our commitment to sustainability, which has been at the heart of Calthorpe Estates for nearly three centuries, and has set the benchmark for commercial schemes within Birmingham.”
The awards were held at the Birmingham IMAX Theatre and were compered by TV personality Tony Robinson.
