Demolition of Edgbaston Shopping Centre begins

November 2007

Demolition has begun on one of Birmingham’s well-known shopping centres, Edgbaston Shopping Centre, to make way for the new £110 million retail and leisure development, Edgbaston Galleries.

Developer Calthorpe Estates is transforming the west end of the city by replacing the old retail complex with the new 424,500 sq ft Edgbaston Galleries. The scheme represents the largest regeneration project of a principal gateway to Birmingham.
The aspirational development has planning consent for a foodstore, retail and leisure space, Grade A offices, hotel accommodation and 800 car parking spaces.

Mark Lambert, Director of Development at Calthorpe Estates said: “We are excited to have reached this milestone in the transformation of the west end of Birmingham. The demolition of the existing shopping centre signals the start of our new vision for Edgbaston. Its location on Hagley Road and Five Ways Island means that Edgbaston Galleries will significantly enhance this key gateway into Birmingham city centre and will further add to Birmingham’s urban renaissance.

“We do however recognise that the demolition and development process may cause some inconvenience to the local community but would like to reassure people that we are actively planning for replacement facilities to be located near to the scheme during this period.”

Calthorpe Estates has secured an additional sandwich shop to enhance the many existing leisure and retail facilities available in Edgbaston such as the White Swan, the Plough and Harrow, The Garden House, Subway and Simpsons.

Hudson and Mortimers will be located at 8a Greenfield Crescent in Edgbaston and is due to open in December. An additional refreshment vendor is also planned for the area.

Colemans has been awarded the £1.4 million construction contract, with White Young Green acting as project managers on the scheme.
