An aspiring artist from Woodview Primary School in Edgbaston has won a schools art competition, organised by property investor and developer Calthorpe Estates.

Eleven-year-old Carla Clarke’s drawing of her vision for Edgbaston was chosen by the judges as the overall winner from a shortlist of 30 entries.

As the lucky winner, Carla will have the opportunity to press the plunger with Sir Euan Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe to ‘blow down’ a 17 storey building at Edgbaston Shopping Centre, which is being currently redeveloped. Her artwork is also being showcased on hoardings which are already up around the site.

The demolition of the 52 metre tall office tower, previously known as Calthorpe House, will mark a major milestone in the largest regeneration project of a key Birmingham gateway. This will make way for a new £110 million retail and leisure development - Edgbaston Galleries, one of a number of landmark schemes that make up Calthorpe Estate’s £350 million regeneration programme.

Calthorpe Estates sales and marketing director, Jayne Herritty, commented: “I would like to congratulate Carla on her winning entry and securing this fantastic prize.

“This competition was designed to encourage younger residents of Edgbaston to look around, get excited about their surroundings and make suggestions for how to enhance them.

“Children were invited to submit drawings, paintings and collages of their vision for Edgbaston. The entries received were all of a very high standard and demonstrated the children’s vivid imaginations.

“The judging was difficult but enjoyable and I would like to congratulate Carla and thank all the children who took part in the art competition.

“Carla’s picture was very impressive – it was well thought out and included a variety of interesting buildings and facilities within a green and landscaped environment.”

Carla has also won six tickets for Alton Towers, a party at TGI Fridays for her class, and a canvas print of her picture to keep.
Runners-up Miranda Andrade, also from Woodview Primary School and Khadijah Ahmed from George Dixon Primary School, also have their images displayed on the hoardings and will win a family meal for six at TGI Fridays and a canvas print of their picture.
