Demolition Signals The Start Of A New Sustainable Standard For Offices In Birmingham
November 2006
Demolition is now underway on two 1960s office blocks by Five Ways to make way for one of the most exciting property developments within Birmingham, Calthorpe House.
Work has begun on clearing the buildings, Donne House and Nettleton House, for the arrival of the £40 million Grade A office scheme. Calthorpe House will set the standard for sustainable office accommodation within Birmingham, by aiming to achieve the city’s second BREEAM* rating of ‘excellent’. The first also looks set to be achieved by Calthorpe Estates and their office development, 19 George Road in Edgbaston.
The 102,000 sq ft (9,475 sq m) development boasts a prime position within Birmingham and will change the face of Five Ways for years to come.
David Povall, Commercial Director for property development and investment company Calthorpe Estates commented:
“The demolition signals a new future for commercial accommodation within Birmingham.
Calthorpe House will adopt the highest environmental standards and will demonstrate the best practice in sustainable design and management.
“The scheme represents an ideal solution for businesses seeking the finest office space and will address the lack of quality Grade A commercial accommodation within the city.
“On completion in 2008, Calthorpe House will undoubtedly draw some of the best employers to Birmingham and will create the vision of working life for years to come.”
Calthorpe House will offer fully air-conditioned open plan floor plates of up to 22,000 sq ft (2,044 sq m), as well as the coveted luxury of on-site parking with 257 spaces. This equates to a high ratio of 1:400 sq ft compared to the average of all new Grade A office schemes in the city centre, which is in excess of 1:2000 sq ft.
Calthorpe Estates are working with partners Barberry Developments to deliver the landmark project.
