Calthorpe Estates Achieve Birmingham's First BREEAM Excellent Rating For Office Building

19 George Road

June 2007

19 George Road, Calthorpe Estates’ new £2.2 million contemporary office building in Edgbaston has been awarded a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ – the first commercial scheme in Birmingham ever to receive the accolade.

The 12,545 sq ft office building has been professionally assessed for BREEAM, the Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method, and has exceeded current building regulations, incorporating some of the latest requirements for a sustainable building.

The development, designed by REID Architecture and project managed by DBK Back, was pre let to Shaws, the largest independent firm of dedicated Chartered Tax Advisors in the UK. They have recently taken occupation of the building which has top quality commercial finishes including high levels of insulation and natural day lighting.

Energy conservation measures include 'fresh cooling', flow regulators to strictly monitor water consumption and high efficiency lamps which have been used right the way through the building. Insulation throughout has been of the highest standard, with sto rendering, a kalzip roofing system and powder coated aluminium panels which have provided all the thermo requirements to keep it as environmentally efficient as possible.

David Povall, Commercial Director, Calthorpe Estates said: “We are proud of this achievement which has now created the benchmark for commercial schemes in Birmingham.

“Our commitment to sustainability has been at the heart of Calthorpe Estates for nearly three centuries. Today’s challenging environmental standards are integral to our £350 million regeneration programme and all new office buildings are being built to exacting environmental criteria.”

One such building is Calthorpe House, the £40 million Grade A office development, which is on target to achieve another BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’. The 102,000 sq ft development, situated near Five Ways Island, will offer large open floor plates of up to 22,000 sq ft upon completion.

Calthorpe Estates’ regeneration programme also includes Edgbaston Mill, a 450,000 sq ft retail and leisure development including hotel, office and residential accommodation situated directly opposite Edgbaston Cricket Ground; University Science Park, Pebble Mill, 393,000 sq ft of purpose-built research and development space on the famous former BBC site; and Edgbaston Galleries at Five Ways Island, which represents the largest regeneration project of a principal gateway to Birmingham, offering 425,000 sq ft of retail and leisure facilities as well as hotel and Grade A office space.
