Calthorpe Estates Share Vision For Edgbaston

October 2007

Calthorpe Estates were the private sector sponsors for the event, created by Birmingham-based Friction Arts, which aims to make cultural and social change within local communities using the arts.

Months of artistic participation from local communities in Ladywood culminated in the preview evening and subsequent finale event on Sunday 28 October at Five Ways Estate and Shopping Centre.

Clive Dutton, Director of Planning and Regeneration at Birmingham City Council, highlighted the important role arts played within city communities whilst Calthorpe Estates Associate Director of Development, Richard Dickson, spoke about the ‘new era for Edgbaston’ at the preview evening. With much investment into both Edgbaston and Birmingham over the next five years, linked by Five Ways itself, regeneration plans for the renaissance of the city are well underway.

“Calthorpe Estates are proud to support Friction Arts in their commitment to the people and places of Five Ways, as well as the neighbouring areas of Edgbaston and Ladywood,” said Mr Dickson.

He continued: “Edgbaston is about to undergo its biggest transformation in its history, which will help regenerate and significantly develop the local area. We are currently investing £350 million in exciting projects for retail, leisure and office facilities.

“Demolition will shortly be commencing on Edgbaston Shopping Centre to make way for the new £110 million Edgbaston Galleries development, which represents the largest regeneration project of a principal gateway to Birmingham.

“Calthorpe House is another development also underway. We are investing £40 million into creating new offices of the highest specification where workers will also be able to enjoy the facilities at the new shopping centre which will be located close by.

“There are exciting times ahead in the west side of the city as we prepare to enter a new era for Edgbaston.”
