New Retail Opportunity at Five Ways
A new development just completed by Calthorpe Estates, 54 George Road, is offering prime retail or restaurant space just up from Five Ways station, which is used by over one million passengers a year.
The retail opportunity provides 260 square metres (2,800 square feet) and is on the ground floor of the six storey building that will provide five floors of premier student accommodation for fifty students.
The development follows the refurbishment of Islington Row, which has attracted tenants to all the units, and is part of on-going plans to improve and create further retail and leisure facilities in Edgbaston.
Billie Frain, planning and development executive at Calthorpe Estates said;
“Originally a petrol filling station occupied the site and we have gone through a long process since 2001 to transform the site and progress the scheme. Birmingham is attracting more international and UK students and 54 George Road offers the chance of outstanding accommodation with the benefit of close connectivity across the city.
“The design of the building was done by Glancy Nicholls Architects, a local jewellery quarter based practice, and uses red brick construction clad with elements of gold and features glazed window boxes. Care has been taken so that it is sympathetic to its surroundings within the historic Edgbaston Conservation Area. “
The building was completed ahead of schedule by Torsion Group, a privately owned development and construction company specialising in student accommodation, which means the property is ready ahead of September’s new academic year and the retail space can now be marketed.

The student accommodation, which offers either ensuite bedrooms in clusters of six with a kitchen and lounge or studio ensuite apartments are being offered through Purple Frog, the student accommodation specialists.
